What it means

The No U-Turn sign is a white rectangular regulatory sign with a U-shaped arrow crossed by a red diagonal bar. It prohibits drivers from making a U-turn at the location where it is posted. Drivers must continue straight or turn in a legally permitted direction.

Where you'll see it

At intersections, driveways, and medians where sight distance or traffic volume makes U-turns unsafe. Common in urban business districts, near highway on-ramps, and in school zones. Also posted at locations where visibility is limited — making U-turns dangerous even when traffic appears light.

What to do

Do not attempt a U-turn where this sign is posted, even if the road appears clear. Instead, continue to the next legal intersection where a U-turn is permitted, or use a parking lot or side street to reverse direction safely.

Common mistakes

Drivers sometimes assume a No U-Turn applies only during peak hours. Unless time-of-day restrictions are posted on a supplementary plate below the sign, the prohibition is continuous and 24/7.

State-specific notes
