What to Bring to the Idaho DMV for Your Permit Test

Don't get sent home. Here's the complete checklist — documents, fees, forms, and what to leave at home.

Before You Go

  • Check the ITD website for current office hours and wait times
  • Call ahead to see if you can schedule an appointment (highly recommended)
  • Download the Idaho Driver's Handbook and study the rules of the road
  • Make sure your parent/guardian knows exactly when you are going so they can meet you there
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early to fill out paperwork if you haven't done it online
  • Double-check that all your documents are originals, not photocopies
  • Get a good night's sleep so you're sharp for the test

Required Documents

Proof of Identity (Primary Document)

  • U.S. Passport or Passport Card
  • Certified U.S. Birth Certificate
  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
  • Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization
  • Valid foreign passport with valid U.S. visa and I-94

You must bring the original document; photocopies are not accepted for the primary identity proof.

Proof of Social Security Number

  • Social Security Card
  • W-2 Form with full SSN
  • Pay stub with full SSN
  • SSA-1099 Form
  • Non-SSA-1099 Form

If you do not have an SSN, you must bring a letter from the Social Security Administration stating you are ineligible for one.

Proof of Idaho Residency

Bring 2 of these:

  • Utility bill (electric, water, gas, sewer) issued within 60 days
  • Bank statement issued within 60 days
  • Parent's lease or mortgage statement (if living with parents)
  • School transcript or report card with current address
  • Idaho vehicle registration or title

Idaho requires two different documents to prove residency if you are applying for a REAL ID. For a standard license, one is often sufficient, but bringing two is safer.

Parental / Guardian Consent (applicants under 18)

  • Parent or legal guardian must sign the application in person at the DMV office
  • Parent must provide their own valid ID to verify their signature
  • Legal guardians must bring court documents proving guardianship
  • If parents are divorced, the custodial parent usually signs, but check specific custody orders
  • No notarization is required if the parent appears in person

If a parent cannot appear, Idaho has specific affidavit forms, but appearing in person is the standard and easiest way to avoid delays.

Fees & Payment

$30

This fee covers the learner's permit application and the written knowledge test. It is valid for 4 years. If you fail the written test, you may have to pay a small retest fee.

Forms

Driver's License Application (Form DL-180)

Available at: Available at any Idaho DMV office or downloadable from the ITD website

Do not sign the form until you are in front of the DMV clerk; they need to witness your signature.

What NOT to Bring

  • Large backpacks or heavy bags (storage is limited)
  • Friends or siblings who aren't applying (they can't wait inside)
  • Pets (unless they are service animals)
  • Food or drinks (no eating allowed in the testing area)
  • Your own pen (use the one provided or ask for one)
  • Expensive jewelry or electronics you don't need
  • Confidence issues (just breathe, it's a multiple-choice test)

At the Office

  • The knowledge test is computer-based and multiple-choice
  • You must score at least 80% to pass (20 out of 25 questions)
  • If you fail, you can usually retake it the same day for a small fee, but policies vary by office
  • Once you pass, you'll get an interim paper permit immediately; the real card arrives by mail in a few weeks
  • Listen carefully to the clerk's instructions on the 6-month holding period before you can get your restricted license
