What to Bring to the Kansas DMV for Your Permit Test

Don't get sent home. Here's the complete checklist — documents, fees, forms, and what to leave at home.

Before You Go

  • Check the specific office hours as some close early on Wednesdays
  • Call ahead to see if you need an appointment or if it's first-come, first-served
  • Have your parent or guardian ready to go with you
  • Study the Kansas Driver Handbook thoroughly before arriving
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early to handle paperwork
  • Double-check that all documents are originals, not copies
  • Make sure your parent knows they must be there to sign

Required Documents

Proof of Identity (Primary Document)

  • U.S. Passport or Passport Card
  • Certified U.S. Birth Certificate
  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
  • Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization
  • Valid Kansas Driver License or ID Card

You must bring the original document; photocopies are not accepted for the primary identity proof.

Proof of Social Security Number

  • Social Security Card
  • W-2 Form
  • SSA-1099 Form
  • Pay Stub with full SSN
  • Military ID with SSN

If you don't have a card, bring a W-2 or pay stub. If you are not eligible for an SSN, you must bring a letter from the Social Security Administration stating ineligibility.

Proof of Kansas Residency

Bring 2 of these:

  • Utility bill (electric, water, gas) in parent's name
  • Bank statement with current address
  • School transcript or report card
  • Lease or mortgage statement
  • Parent's Kansas Driver License or ID (if address matches)

Kansas requires two different documents to prove residency if you want a REAL ID. If you are under 18, a parent's proof of residency usually suffices if they sign the consent form.

Parental / Guardian Consent (applicants under 18)

  • Parent or legal guardian must sign the application in person at the office
  • Parent must present their own valid ID
  • Legal guardians must bring court documents proving guardianship
  • Foster parents must bring specific foster care documentation
  • Single parents can sign alone if they have sole custody

The parent or guardian MUST appear with the teen at the office; they cannot just sign a form at home and mail it in.

Fees & Payment

$22

This fee covers the learner's permit application and the written test. If you fail the written test, you may need to pay a small re-test fee.

Forms

Application for Driver's License or Non-Driver ID Card (Form TR-100)

Available at: Available at the office or downloadable from the Kansas Department of Revenue website

Do not sign the form until you are in front of the DMV clerk; they need to witness your signature.

What NOT to Bring

  • Large backpacks or heavy bags (storage is limited)
  • Your own pen (use the one provided to avoid issues)
  • Friends or siblings who aren't applying (they can't wait inside)
  • Pets (service animals only)
  • Food or drinks (no eating in the testing area)
  • Electronic devices (phones must be silenced and put away during the test)
  • Expired or photocopied documents

At the Office

  • The written test is computer-based and takes about 30 minutes
  • You must pass the vision screening first before taking the written test
  • If you fail the written test, you can usually retake it the same day for a fee
  • You will get an interim paper permit immediately; the hard plastic card arrives by mail in 2-3 weeks
  • Listen carefully to the clerk's instructions on how to use your new permit (e.g., no driving alone)
