What to Bring to the New Mexico DMV for Your Permit Test
Don't get sent home. Here's the complete checklist — documents, fees, forms, and what to leave at home.
Before You Go
- →Schedule an appointment online if possible to skip the long walk-in lines
- →Double-check that all documents are originals, not photocopies
- →Have your parent/guardian ready to go with their own ID
- →Study the New Mexico Driver's Manual thoroughly before arriving
- →Arrive at least 30 minutes early to handle any paperwork delays
- →Make sure your name matches exactly on all documents (no nicknames)
- →Check the MVD website for any holiday closures before heading out
Required Documents
Proof of Identity (Primary Document)
- ✓Valid U.S. Passport or Passport Card
- ✓Certified U.S. Birth Certificate (with raised seal)
- ✓Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
- ✓Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization
- ✓Valid Foreign Passport with valid U.S. Visa and I-94
You must bring the original document; photocopies or photos of documents on your phone will not be accepted. If your name has changed, bring the marriage certificate or court order connecting the names.
Proof of Social Security Number
- ✓Social Security Card (original)
- ✓W-2 Form with full SSN
- ✓Paystub with full SSN
- ✓SSA-1099 Form
- ✓Non-SSA-1099 Form
New Mexico requires proof of your SSN. If you do not have a card, you must visit the Social Security Administration first to get one; the MVD cannot issue a permit without this proof unless you are a non-citizen ineligible for an SSN, in which case you need an official SSA letter stating ineligibility.
Proof of New Mexico Residency
Bring 2 of these:
- ✓Utility bill (electric, water, gas, landline phone) issued within the last 60 days
- ✓Bank or credit card statement issued within the last 60 days
- ✓Parent's lease or mortgage statement (if living with parents)
- ✓New Mexico vehicle registration or title
- ✓New Mexico school enrollment record or report card
For a standard license, one document is usually enough, but for a REAL ID compliant permit, you must bring TWO different documents proving your New Mexico address. Both must show your name and current address.
Parental / Guardian Consent (applicants under 18)
- ✓Parent or legal guardian must appear in person with you at the MVD office
- ✓Guardian must present their own valid photo ID
- ✓Guardian must sign the application form in front of the MVD clerk
- ✓If parents are divorced, the legal custodial parent must appear
- ✓Foster parents must provide specific court documentation proving guardianship
If a parent cannot appear, a notarized affidavit of consent is generally not accepted for the initial permit application; the parent/guardian presence is mandatory to verify identity and consent.
Fees & Payment
$18
This $18 fee covers the learner's permit application and the written knowledge test. If you fail the written test, there is a retest fee (usually $10) to take it again. The permit is valid for one year.
Accepted payment:
Forms
Application for Driver License or Identification Card (Form MVD-100)
Available at: Available at the MVD office or downloadable from the New Mexico MVD website
Do not sign the form until you are in front of the MVD examiner; they need to witness your signature.
What NOT to Bring
- ✗Your cell phone (turn it off or leave it in the car; no texting or calls allowed in the waiting area)
- ✗Large backpacks or bags (storage is limited and security checks are strict)
- ✗Friends or siblings (only the applicant and the consenting parent/guardian should enter)
- ✗Pets (service animals are the only exception)
- ✗Food or drinks (no eating or drinking inside the office)
- ✗Your own pen (use the one provided by the MVD to avoid ink issues)
- ✗Fake or expired documents (this will get you turned away immediately)
At the Office
- →The written test is computer-based; bring your own glasses if you need them to read the screen
- →You must pass the vision screening before taking the written test
- →If you fail the written test, you can usually retake it the same day for a small fee
- →Once you pass, you will get an interim paper permit immediately; the plastic card arrives by mail in 2-3 weeks
- →Listen carefully to the examiner's instructions on how to log your 50 practice driving hours
