What to Bring to the North Carolina DMV for Your Permit Test

Don't get sent home. Here's the complete checklist — documents, fees, forms, and what to leave at home.

Before You Go

  • Schedule an appointment online to skip the long lines
  • Complete the online pre-application on the NCDMV website if eligible
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early for check-in
  • Study the North Carolina Driver's Handbook thoroughly
  • Make sure your parent/guardian knows the exact time and location
  • Double-check that all documents are originals, not copies
  • Get a good night's sleep before the test

Required Documents

Proof of Identity (Primary Document)

  • U.S. Passport or Passport Card
  • Certified U.S. Birth Certificate
  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
  • Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization
  • Valid Foreign Passport with I-94
  • Military ID

You must bring the original document; photocopies are not accepted. For a REAL ID, ensure your birth certificate has a raised seal or is a certified copy.

Proof of Social Security Number

  • Social Security Card
  • W-2 Form
  • SSA-1099 Form
  • Pay Stub with full name and SSN
  • Non-SSA-issued document with full name and SSN

If you don't have a card, bring a W-2 or pay stub. If you are not eligible for an SSN, you must bring a letter from the Social Security Administration stating ineligibility.

Proof of North Carolina Residency

Bring 2 of these:

  • Utility bill (electric, water, gas) in parent's name
  • Bank statement
  • School transcript or report card
  • Lease or mortgage agreement
  • Parent's driver's license (if address matches)

North Carolina requires two different documents to prove residency for a REAL ID. If you are under 18, these usually must be in your parent or guardian's name.

Parental / Guardian Consent (applicants under 18)

  • Parent or guardian must sign the application in front of the DMV examiner
  • Parent/guardian must provide their own proof of identity and residency
  • If parents are divorced, the custodial parent must sign
  • Legal guardians must bring court documents proving guardianship

Both parents do not need to be there, but the parent signing must be the legal guardian or custodial parent. Foster parents need specific court documentation.

Proof of Driver's Education

  • Certificate of Completion (DL-440) from a state-approved driver education course
  • High School Driver Education transcript

Yes, driver's ed is mandatory for all teens under 18 in North Carolina. You cannot get your permit without this certificate.
